What's New in Parliament
3 April 2008
During an address to the nation on Wednesday April 2, 2008, Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced two portfolio changes. The Honourable Donna Cox, Minister of State in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs is now Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, and Mr. Roger Joseph, Member for La Horquetta/Talparo, has been appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Works and Transport. Both of these appointments take effect on Thursday April 3, 2008. Our list of Members of the House of Representatives has been amended to reflect these changes.

On Monday February 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. the Electoral College will sit in the Parliament Chamber for the purpose of electing the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Electoral College consists of all members of the Senate and House of Representatives assembled together. The Speaker of the House is the Chairman of the Electoral College

The Ninth Parliament of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will open on Monday December 17, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Members of both Houses will first meet separately to appoint their respective Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer, following which each Member will take the oath of office. Both Houses will then assemble in the Parliament Chamber to listen to an address by the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, TC, CMT, Ph.D. In addition to Members of Parliament, members of the High Court, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and other senior public officials are expected to attend.

The General Election for membership in the House of Representatives of the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was held on Monday November 05, 2007. Preliminary results show that of the 41 constituencies the People's National Movement won 26 and the United National Congress 15.

In a brief statement in the House of Representatives today, the Honourable Patrick Manning, MP, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance advised the House that the Eighth Republican Parliament would be dissolved at midnight on 28 September 2007. The Prime Minister also advised that General Elections for the Ninth Republican Parliament would be held on Monday November 05, 2007.

With effect from Friday March 16, 2007 all LIVE sittings of the Senate and House of Representatives will be broadcast on NCC Channel 4. This means that viewers in Tobago and Trinidad who could not access the Parliament Channel 11 on Cable TV, now can do so in part.
Please note that this coverage refers to live sittings of the Senate and House of Representatives only. Rebroadcasts of sittings and public education programs from Channel 11 will not be shown on NCC 4.
The Office of the Parliament is working assiduously to ensure that all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago have access to its content.
On February 04, 2007 the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago will commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the reopening of the Red House. The building was gutted by fire on March 23, 1903 and was reconstructed between 1904 and 1907. The Parliament will engage in a number of activities from 4th to 9th February to highlight the reestablishment of this historic landmark in the center of the city of Port-of-Spain.

Sittings of the Fifth Session of the Eighth Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago resume following the Christmas break. The Senate and House of Representatives recommence on Tuesday January 09 and Friday January 12, 2007 respectively at 1:30 p.m. The Senate is scheduled to debate the Home Mortgage Bank (Amendment) Bill, 2006 while the House is scheduled to resume its debate on the Heritage and Stabilization Fund (No.2) Bill, 2006.

The Parliament Channel will officially launch on Friday September 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., following the First Sitting of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Fifth Session of the Eighth Parliament. Short presentations are expected by the Honourable Prime Minister, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House and Leader of the Opposition.

On Friday August 18, 2006 the Parliament Channel begins testing of its transmission on cable television. On December 14, 2004 and March 02, 2005 respectively, the Senate and the House of Representatives adopted a Joint Select Committee report that recommended, inter alia, that arrangements be made for the debates and business of both Houses to be transmitted live through the electronic media and that a dedicated channel be set up solely for the purpose of broadcasting of parliamentary affairs.
The sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday 18th August, 2006 from 1:30 p.m. will be the first to be carried live on the Channel.

It is with sadness that the Office of the Parliament learned of the death of former President of the Senate, Mr. Ganace Ramdial on Saturday July 01, 2006. Mr. Ramdial served as President of the Senate during the 5th and 6th Republican Parliaments (1995 to 2001). During that time, he acted as President of the Republic on several occasions.

The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Bill, 2006 was published in the Sunday Express of June 11, 2006. Comments and suggestions can be sent via email, via fax or via regular mail to the Joint Select Committee appointed to consider and report to Parliament on the Bill.

Ms. Lynette Stephenson, SC, has been appointed Ombudsman of Trinidad and Tobago. Ms. Stephenson replaces Justice George Edoo, who has retired. The oath was administered in the Members' Dining Room and Lounge of the Red House at 10 a.m. by the Speaker of the House, as required by the Constitution.
Biographical data of the new Ombudsman will be added to this site shortly.

Two new Senators took the oath of office in the Senate today. Senator Dr. Tim Gopeesingh and Senator Ato Boldon, both Opposition Senators, replaced Senators Robin Montano and Roy Augustus.
